Game Recap

After defeating Grandville on Friday night, the varsity water polo team ended up finishing fifth at the Shoot Out at the Shore tournament. Zeeland lost to Ann Arbor Huron early Saturday morning during pool play, but they finished the weekend with three consecutive wins over Birmingham Seaholm, East Kentwood, and Grand Haven.

Against Seaholm the team played an incredibly efficient game. The team was collectively fifteen for eighteen on shots with eleven of those goals being assisted. Coincidentally the team also had fifteen steals- six of those coming from Ben Thomas. Protecting the goal, Aaron Letts had eight saves while Jon Michael Hoeve had three field blocks.

However the game of the weekend was against district rival, and host, Grand Haven. It was a back and forth game that wasn’t decided until the last thirty seconds. Despite a late push, Zeeland was able to maintain the lead as the horn sounded. Gabe Trevino had a great offensive game netting six goals, but the deciding factor was Zeeland’s great team defense. There were a total of twenty-two steals, four field blocks, and eight big saves in goal against a very strong Grand Haven team. Philip DeJonge was instrumental in this defense effort as he was able to take the ball away from Grand Haven five times and had one of those field blocks.

The team plays next against East Kentwood at home on Wednesday.
