Welcome to the first edition of my Friday notes for the 2015-16 school year.  Each week I do my best to update you on what’s happening in the world of Zeeland East Athletics and also attach the next week’s schedule.

Whew!  Where do I begin?  We are concluding the first week of practice/tryouts and so far everything seems to be on track.  Football actually started Monday and conclude their week with their annual Brown & Gold Scrimmage in the stadium this evening.  They have had a great start and are really excited to start hitting someone in a different color uniform!  Next Thursday they travel to Plainwell for another scrimmage before they get ready to start their season.

All other sports are on day 3 of their season – not much to report on them yet but although they are just getting started, the reality is most of them have been working and training hard all summer.  Time to put all that work into their season!!

I am excited to announce that we will be starting a Zeeland Sports Hall of Fame and are working directly with our athletic boosters to make this happen.  We are looking at the last weekend in March and are working hard to put all the details into place.  I can’t tell you how excited I am to get this going so look for more info in the next few months!

Speaking of our athletic boosters, I want to strongly encourage you to volunteer in the concession stand when called upon.  Concession stand revenue is vital to our funding and without workers, not only can we not generate those funds, but we won’t be able to open concessions at our sporting events.  So please, when called upon to help, take your turn and volunteer just a few hours each year!!  If you are interested in becoming a booster member, they meet the 2nd Monday of every month at 7:00.  What a great group of parents who work hard for our kids – thank you boosters!!

If you are a parent who likes to take pictures at your son or daughter’s sporting events, I would love to have you post them to our athletic website.  It is so easy to do and really is a nice touch for our site.  I can probably even teach the more savvy computer folks over the phone.  Speaking of our website, each year it gets better and better.  We will do our best to keep it updated with any and all information so please bookmark it and like us on facebook! (I can’t believe I just said that!)

Once again we will be offering season passes.  The prices have remained the same for 8 years and if you attend many contests, it’s a great way to save money.  Prices are as follows…

Family Pass = $225 (each member of the immediate family is included)

Individual pass = $75

Punch Card = $45

Unfortunately we are not set up for credit cards but we will take cash or checks.

One last thought…When I tell people who don’t know me very well what I do, they typically have this response…”How do you deal with those crazy parents”.  My response is always the same – it’s really not that bad and actually, with just a few exceptions, our parents are great and they are very supportive and encouraging.  I know that is not that way in all districts – I know this because I hear stories from my AD Colleagues who share some pretty tough stories with me.  So, thank you for being that kind of parent who is supportive – it means a great deal to me but most importantly to your child.  I have attached an article from Salpointe Cathoilc High School (I have no idea where that even is) that has some great points in it.  I encourage you to take a quick read and take it for what it is worth.

Remember to encourage your child to drink lots of water – looks like it’s going to heat up next week!  If you have any questions don’t hesitate to email me at or call me at 748-3124.  I am looking forward to another great year at ZEHS!

Yours in Sport,
